De-motivation manifests itself in many ugly ways. It can be as simple as decreased productivity, or it could be as pressing as high absenteeism. Either way, demotivation is a problem that many companies must face as a reality.

For some employees, a motivation could be as simple as free lunch once a week, company-sponsored movies, or a raise. But sometimes, it doesn’t result into motivated people.

Here are some tips that could help out in the quest to keep your employees productive, motivated, and energized:

Work place decorations

Clamping down on employee’s workplaces could be an absolute mood killer. For some, the workplace is an extension of home. And decorations are often those that remind them of good vibes. Mandating them to clear out their desks, and keep their tables decoration-free could seriously dampen their spirits, and could lead to demotivation.

On the other hand, allowing employees to decorate their workplace as they see fit makes them comfortable with their own workplace. Their environment becomes one that they are used to. It also helps them express their creativity and individuality.

Even non-creative departments will benefit from this practice, as recognizing that diversity is an important part of your office culture can go a long way to help your employees feel at home.

Celebrate small victories

In an outputs-focused office environment, beating a project deadline or securing an account is a common occurrence. For employees, it’s just another day in their lives. But to mix it up, you may opt to throw a small party from time to time, or even just treat the team out to lunch. Even a celebratory cake is a sign that management is aware of the efforts of their employees. This sets up a simple recognition system which keeps employees focused.

Get to know your employees

Employees are often seen as just that — employees. Their work ends when they clock out from their shifts, and they will stop caring about the company until the next day when they clock in. As management, you may find yourself treating your employees the same way: you do not care about their lives as long as they show up to work every day.

To motivate employees, leaders and bosses should make it a point to know their employees on a more personal level. A small chat here and there, a small talk about their hobbies and their weekend activities make them feel like they are human and what they do outside of the office matters. Their interests and hobbies often teach them certain skills which could be honed further in the workplace, and can be used in future projects.

For HR, knowing your employees on a personal level allows you to keep a profile on each of them. It gives you access to their motivations, goals, and aspirations. This is a useful tool in evaluating what approach you need to motivate your employees.

Breaking the ice between you and your employees sends a clear message: they matter.
